Recognizing that the Bible is the word of
God to man, and understanding the priority
of knowing and obeying its truths, the
leadership at Corbin City Baptist Church
are deeply committed to studying and
teaching Scripture with diligence and
authority. The focus of each worship
service, Sunday School class, and Bible
study, is the proclamation of God's Word.
It alone is the source of truth concerning
the character of God, the nature of man,
the way of salvation, and the hope of heaven.
Declaring Scripture's truth is our greatest
privilege as Christ' ambassadors. Therefore,
the central ministry of Corbin City Baptist
Church is the continuous imparting of biblical
truth to the people of God that they may know
God and serve Him in worship and ministry.
In 1675 Baptist from England settled in Cape May New Jersey.
At first they worshiped in their homes but in 1690 they
established Cohansey Baptist Church. The Cohansey Baptist
Church spread its influence southward until a church was
organized in 1761 at Dividing Creek. It was the Dividing
Creek Baptist Church, which encouraged Nathaniel Jenkins in
1770 to began preaching at Head of the River where a Church
was organized and incorporate on July 23, 1771. The Church
membership at this time was 35.
The Church was called Tuckahoe Baptist Church. It stood on
the 1.44 acre lot at Head of the River where a Baptist
Cemetery can still be seen. On June 5th 1968 the church
voted to give this property to Head Of the River Methodist
Church after they promised to take care of the land.
The first pastor was John Sutton, 1771-1772. A Mr. Lock
came next until 1779. Then came Rev. Thomas Brooks who was
followed by Rev. Jayne. Pastor's Brooks and Jayne are both
buried at the Baptist Cemetery at Dividing Creek.
In August 1792, 29 members of the Tuckahoe Baptist Church
started a new Baptist Church in West Creek. Rev. Isaac
Bonnell was Pastor at Tuckahoe and West Creek until 1794.
Rev. Peter Groom followed and was pastor of both churches
until 1805. Both these pastors are buried at Head Of the
River Baptist Cemetery.
The Church dwindled until it's doors were closed and the
church disbanded in 1834.
In 1870 Ephraim Steele and his family came from Brooklyn,
to live in Tuckahoe. They united with the Second Cape May
Baptist Church. The long distance to the church led to a
desire for a nearer place of worship, and the organization
of a Mite Society. This was organized in 1872. In 1884,
the Mite Society purchased a lot on the Atlantic County
side of the Tuckahow River (our present location) for $350,
from a Mr. F. Madden, deeded to the trustees of the Second
Cape May Baptist Church. The Baptists of Tuckahoe, the
Pastor of the Second Cape May Church and the State
Missionary, Rev. S. Dare, cooperated to start a building fund.
In 1884 a church was organized.
In 1885 a gothic design, 30 x 40 feet, with a front
vestibule and a rear projection, 10 x 25 feet, containing a
pulpit, baptistery and side rooms was built at a cost of
about $ 2,000.
On December 17th, 1885, the new building was dedicated and
the cornerstone laid. Rev. J.G. Entrekin was the first
pastor, serving until April 30,1892.
On October 4, 1896 the new baptistery was used for the first
time as the church's second pastor, Rev. M. Frayne immersed
Mabel Clark.
In 1925 Rev. E.M. Stoefel, pastored both the Second Cape
May Baptist Church as well as the Tuckahoe Baptist Church,
now with a membership of 22.
On May 12 1928 it was voted to discontinue church services
and simply hold Sunday School each Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
This went on for 30 years, except for occasional special
services at Christmas and Easter.
In 1959 Dr. Harry Findeison reopened the church and served as
Pastor until July 1974. It was also in 1959 that the name of
the Church was changed to Corbin City
Baptist. The area that is now Corbin City was originally
Tuckahoe but was changed to Corbin City in 1922. In May of
the same year, members agreed to start regular services.
On March 1, 1960, Sunday School was changed to 9:45 a.m.,
worship at 11:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and a mid-week prayer
meeting. Soon after the Sunday evening service and the mid-week
prayer meeting were dropped due to lack of attendance.
In 1967, seven ladies of the church started to meet each
Wednesday morning. This Bible Study Class continues to
meet to this day. The group, which is made up of numerous
men and women from various local churches meet every
Wednesday morning, September through May at 10:00 a.m.
It is presently led by Mr. George Zorn of Ocean View.
Pastor R.F. Biggin began his duties as Pastor on
Sunday, September 29, 1974.
He faithfully served a Pastor until 1987.
Pastor Paul C. Kinzler became took on the role of Pastor
from 1988-1989
While searching for a Pastor, David Gandy Sr. filled the pulpit.
During this year, officers of the church
asked Gethsemane Baptist Church in Woodbine, NJ if their
pastor would be able to come and fill the pulpit on
Sundays. Pastor Michael Panburn did this, speaking at
Corbin City and pastoring at Woodbine for about 3 years.
On January 8th, 1995, the membership of the church
unanimously voted to withdraw themselves from the American
Baptist Churches Association and hence, became an
independent Baptist church, having no ties or affiliations.
In December of 1994, Pastor had felt led of God to
relinquish the pulpit at Woodbine. He was installed as
Pastor of Corbin City Baptist Church later in 1995. He
served as pastor until March 2000.
Dr. Randall G. Hooper, our current pastor, came to Corbin City
December of 2001. In June of 2001 A Thursday night Bible study
and prayer meeting was begun and continues with much enthusiasm.
On October 2nd, 2005 the Church began a Sunday evening service.
The Church also supports Radio Bible Class, Missionary Aviation
Fellowship, Atlantic City Rescue Mission and the McCarthy family
with CBInternational to Senegal.
As interesting as history is, the future is what we are
working for. God is doing wonderful things. Our numbers
have grown as men, women and children are being taught in
God's Word and making decisions or Christ. The good people
of Corbin City Baptist are giving generously to the Lord's
work and many improvements are being made. We thank our
God for each faithful person who has put their hand to
Corbin's plow. We believe that the best days are yet to
come. Corbin City Baptist has a spiritually rich heritage
and invites you to join us as we remain a lighthouse of
Truth in South Jersey.
